Mermaid Skirt

An easy peasy ‘Mermaid Skirt’ that Serena sewed (under close supervision) as now she wants to be a fashion designer!!

I found this blue shiny material in the cupboard and it was just ‘perfect’ for this project.

The first step was to measure the length and width of the material so it can slip over her hips easily. Serena then neatly cut it out.

Now we measure and cut the ‘frilly’ edging.  We measured out twice the length skirt hem (we had to sew 2 pieces together to get the right length) and the width was about 15cm.

Now the fun part begins!! Serena overlocked the side seem of the pencil skirt.

Then we measured and sew the waistband. Making sure it was wide enough for the elastic to fit through.

We pinned a big safety pin onto the end of the elastic and threaded it into the waistband, then sew the ends together. We now have a pencil skirt!!

With this next step I measured where Serenas knees were and also the length she wanted the skirt at the back then laid the skirt flat with the seam centre front. We pinned (both bits of material together) to the shape that we wanted, higher at the front then scooped to long at the back not forgetting to take off 15cm for the frilly hem.

Serena carefully cut it out.

For the hemline on the frilly bit we just sewed a rolled hem with the overlocker. We then used a loose big stich on the top of the material on the normal sewing machine so we could pull one thread to gather it.

Now we placed a pin at quarter marks on both the skirt and hem piece before we gather the hem line material. Once gathered we matched quarter mark pins so the gather hem was evenly spaced out, then we pined and sewed it!!

DONE!!

She can also wear it with the higher part on the side

P.S. After she took the skirt off the elastic twisted around a bit in the waistband so I sewed another row of stitching in the centre to keep it in place.

 

Wish Stones

Wish Stones 

 

These are cute little wish stones made with love and extra wishing power!!

A simple DIY craft for anyone to do. All you need are glass stones, nail art stickers, clear nail polish (or glitter nail polish) and little organza bags to keep the finished stones in.

 

The process is so simple….. just stick the nail art stickers onto the glass stones

And then paint over them in nail polish to help the sticker stay in place. You can use the glitter nail polish to add extra sparkle to them!!

Once dry place them into the organza bay ready for when you need it.

 

When you are feeling unlucky

And nothings going right

Take one little stone

And hold it tight.

Sometimes we go off track

That’s when this wish stone

Will guide you safely back.

 

Every now and again you will have to re-energize the stones for more ‘wishing powers’ by placing them in either full moon rays or full sunlight for a couple of hours.

 

 

Heart no-sew pillow

Heart No-Sew Pillow

 

This is a cute easy pillow that anyone can make!!

All you need is 2 pieces of contrasting polar fleece, pillow stuffing, sharp scissors, hole punch and pins.

 I started by drawing a big heart shape onto paper (make sure it’s a nice fat heart!!) then we pinned it onto both pieces of the polar fleece.

Serena carefully cut it out.

We then measured 4cm in pinned it for marking.

Now we went around the edge and place a pin at every 2cm. Serena cut a slit at each 2cm pin up to the pin marking the 4cm line.

 

The pillow should now look like this

The next step now is to use a hole punch and put a hole centred just above each flap you just cut. You could cut little slits with either a cutting knife or scissors instead but I couldn’t quit trust Serenas skills in this area and was afraid she would cut each flap off!! Lol

 

 

This next step is a little tricky to explain but here we go… you have to get BOTH flaps and thread them down and through the bottom of the hole up towards the top, (pull up through the hole)

 

The back should look like this

Repeat all around the edge but don’t forget to leave a small gap for the stuffing.

 

After you have stuffed it to your liking repeat the above step to finish closing.

WOW!! How cute does this look !!

 

 

You can do any shape you wish, Serena now wants to do a diamond one.
